Solenoids
When you think about golf carts, Club Car is the first brand that comes to mind. A Club Car is a staple at many golf courses across North America; some people think that Club Cars are Yamaha golf carts, but this is not the case. Club Cars are the original utility vehicles for mobility in golf courses, and they have been around since the early 1960s. The sight of an all-American Club Car golf cart is synonymous with the television broadcasts of major PGA tournaments.
These days, the Club brand includes gas golf cart and electric golf cart models. The Club Car DS line is named after Dom Saporito, one of the most influential engineers in the history of golf carts. Whether you have gas or electric Club Car models, you will need to replace the solenoid at some point. Solenoids last longer than most golf cart batteries, but they start acting up after about 10,000 operations, which in a busy golf course means a few years.
Understanding Golf Cart Solenoids
In essence, solenoids are secondary motors in the golf cart starter system. With gas engines, solenoids provide electricity after the ignition switch has been activated, thus prompting the starter to turn over. Since electric golf carts lack starters, the solenoid provides energy to the motor through the controller.
Solenoids are subject to wear and tear through overheating after thousands of operations. When the gas engine fails to turn over, this could be a sign that the solenoid no longer works; all you will hear will be repeated clicks. In electric golf carts, you will not hear a click at all and the motor will not activate.
